Meet Louis: Shanghai Skyline Artist Inspiring Big Ideas in Pre-K
At 51³Ô¹ÏÍøºÚÁÏ, even our youngest learners are invited to lead the way. In Louis X.’s Pre-Kindergarten classroom, that philosophy has taken shape in his detailed daily drawings of the Shanghai skyline. From his very first day of school, Louis has been captivated by the city’s towering structures, especially the Shanghai Tower. What began as daily sketches quickly became a passion that sparked a yearlong journey of creativity, collaboration, and community in his classroom.
In SAS’s Reggio Emilia inspired Pre-K classroom, student interests shape the learning experience. Louis’s enthusiasm inspired his classmates to build the skyline with blocks and boxes, to draw their own versions of the city, and to explore different ways of expressing ideas through art, photography, and sculpture. His passion even led to a class field trip to Shanghai Tower, where students observed the skyline in person and created the tower on-site using materials they brought with them.
Louis’s role in the classroom has grown from artist to expert. He often guides his peers in capturing the intricate details of the skyline. This four-year-old’s curiosity has helped deepen the class’s collective understanding of the city they call home and has reminded everyone of the power of student voice and agency.
